Chimera - Biface
An existence that doesn't create boundaries, but transcends them. An entity where different realities mingle and coexist, transcending traditional categories to explore new forms. The “chimera” is not only a mysterious creature, but it may also represent the ambiguity of boundaries and the concept of hybrid existence in modern society.
Throughout human evolution, technology has extended the capabilities of the body. As noted by André Leroi-Gourhan, a renowned archaeologist and cultural anthropologist, tools and technology function as extensions of the human body, driving cultural development. In contrast, animals evolve without reliance on technology, adapting their physical forms to achieve harmony with their environment. The human ideal as a chimera might involve maintaining a connection with nature, akin to animals, while continuing to evolve with technology. This duality questions the environmental challenges of our time and humanity's future, hinting at the possibility of a symbiotic existence that explores new forms.
Dialogue with Stone
During my lockdown, I began studying the region's varied stones in the Dordogne. Flint, formed through the precipitation of silica in sedimentary layers like limestone, served as the material for humanity's earliest tools. The Lascaux cave paintings, preserved for over 20,000 years due to the crystallizing action of limestone surfaces, exemplify this profound symbiosis between nature and human creativity. This region is also renowned for its golden limestone, prominently seen in the historic town of Sarlat.
Extension#Biface
The “Extension#Biface” is a limestone sculpture shaped like a smartphone, featuring the image of a double-sided stone tool. It symbolizes the evolution of technology, from its origins to the present day. Exhibited alongside are four paintings portraying humans as chimeras whose capacities—intensity, speed, distance, and memory—are expanded through tools and technology. In an era of accelerating AI and fluid identities, the concept of “chimera - biface” offers a new framework for rethinking the interplay of humanity, technology, and identity, once again.
