AMOK - An opera loosely inspired by the relationship between Alma Mahler and Oskar Kokoschka

AMOK. Under this mysterious name lie hidden the initials of Alma Mahler and Oskar Kokoschka. The Muse and the Painter. Two extraordinary characters who, at the dawn of the First World War, lived a crazy and tumultuous affair. She was the widow of composer Gustav Mahler, and he a young artist. Kokoschka made Alma his muse and inspiration. Their separation left him bereft. He enlists in the army and returns wounded from the front.

AMOK. For ethnologists, this word refers to a mad dash close to suicide, a term also used to describe the young soldiers of the First World War who ran madly towards the enemy lines. The initials of this passionate couple are strangely troubling... Author and director Orianne Moretti's libretto builds on this strange correspondence, blending Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal and Goethe's Faust in an opera she describes as “expressionist”. For, she says, it is in their poetry that she has found an excessiveness to match this love story with its almost medieval allure. Set to original music by François Cattin, thirteen lyric singers embody the figures who crossed the lives of the terrible lovers.
